Baaghi Friday (Day 1) Box Office Collections

9:30AM Update: Baaghi seems to have surprised at mass centres. With more figures coming in, the film seems to have collected around 11.5 crore on Friday. Baaghi has collected Rs 11.5 crore on Day 1 (Friday) at the box office. The film has performed well at mass-centres, including circuits like Rajasthan, Bihar, UP, C.P Berar and C.I. The big advantage for the film was its content. There hasn’t been a youth action films in recent times and the opening of Baaghi seems to suggest that there was a ‘thirst’ for a massy film at smaller centres.

Can The Jungle Book cross the 200 crore mark in India?

The Jungle Book is on a record-shattering run, which is now comparable to one of Bollywood’s best trending films like 3 Idiots. The first week business of 3 Idiots was a little higher at Rs 79.5 crore (including paid preview collections of 2.5 crore), while The Jungle Book collected Rs 74.08 crore. In the second week too, the difference was about the same with 3 Idiots leading by around 5-10%. But while 3 Idiots had the advantage of New Year and other holidays, The Jungle Book was competing against a big film like FAN – which it eventually managed to destroy.

Top Bollywood Actors Overseas: May 2016

It won’t be long before we include the younger generation of actors in our ’overseas’ ranking. Actors like Sidharth Malhotra ($7 million – Kapoor & Sons), Arjun Kapoor ($4.1 million – Ki & Ka), Varun Dhawan ($2.4 million – Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania) are gaining popularity in the overseas markets. They are already ahead of older actors like Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan, and could soon challenge stars like Akshay Kumar.

FAN box office collections and trends similar to Brothers

The box office collections and trends of Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN is similar to Akshay Kumar’s Brothers which released in theatres during the ‘Independence Day’ weekend last year. Both films took a similar opening (after negating the partial holiday advantage for FAN), similar weekend (Brothers benefitting because of the big national holiday on Saturday) and both will finish with similar lifetime totals – with FAN showing slightly better trends, which would help it to collect about 2-3 crore more than Brothers.

The Jungle Book vs other big Hindi films: 3rd Weekend BO collections

The Jungle Book has recorded the 5th highest third weekend collections of all-time, after the film managed to collect Rs 18.92 crore in its third weekend at the India box office. It’s arguably the best trending film in recent times, because the 4 other films in the list took much better starts or released during big holiday weekends (PK and Bajirao Mastani benefitted from New Year week). The Jungle Book’s 3rd weekend collections are about the same as 3 Idiots – which released back in 2009.

Can SRK make a comeback after FAN?

This page is part of our ongoing AskIndicine QnA session, where we take questions from our readers. This page has been created to discuss the answer. You can follow the live QnA here Q. Has SRK’s streak of back to back hit films ended with FAN and do you think Salman can break the all time record set by Rajesh Khanna. A. Yes, the winning streak has ended. Rajesh Khanna had 15 consecutive successful films, starting with Aradhana in 1969 to Apna Desh in 1972. Shah Rukh Khan’s success-streak started with Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (after the failure of Paheli) and ends with the theatrical failure of FAN. He had 12 films that were ‘Above Average’ or better. Q. Why FAN IMDb rating is so high when it neither worked at single screens or multiplexes, domestic or overseas? A. That’s because most of the votes are from fans. The rating was 9 on the day the film released, 8.3 earlier this week, it’s now 8.1. IMDb ratings gradually drop.  The ratings are no longer as reliable as they used to be, atleast not as soon as the film is released. Q. Top 5 superstars in terms of fan following? A. Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar. Q. Will the focus of Priyanka and Deepika on their Hollywood careers affect their standing in the Hindi Film Industry? A. Priyanka is in her mid-30s now and her move to Hollywood has come at the right age. Actresses in Hollywood have longer careers, while in our film industry the decline begins at the age of 31-32. Deepika hasn’t completely moved to Hollywood, she’s doing just one film, so it remains to be seen how it goes for her. Q. What does the future beholds for SRK as a commercial star? His future line ups (apart from Raees may be) doesn’t look like out-n-out commercial films…so does the debacle of Dilwale and FAN going to affect his popularity among neutral audience? A. His following among neutral audience has decreased in the last few years, but his fan-following remains strong. It’s exactly the reason why his films are taking a massive opening, but not sustaining even during the first weekend. Word-of-mouth of his last few films have been mixed to negative, so he needs a big success now. A film that not only opens well, but does well for 2-3 weeks on the strength of positive word-of-mouth. Raees could be that film, it has commercial ingredients and the reports are positive too. All it needs is a good date, but the makers are struggling to find a suitable release date for the film. That in itself is a big worry, because when SRK announced a film before, the others would simply make way for him. But now, we have clashes and other producers holding press conferences to re-confirm their release date or releasing their first look posters 5 months prior, to slam the release date. For the three Khans to sustain their dominance over the industry, they need solo releases during festive weekends (Eid, Diwali, Christmas), if they can’t get that, they might struggle to deliver those big grossers, which will weaken their standing. Aamir and Salman have been able to hold – Aamir is getting a solo Christmas release, Salman has already booked Eid and Diwali next year. Losing the clash to Bajirao Mastani has hurt SRK. Having said all that, he’s still a top star with a huge die-hard following. who needs one good film to bounce back strongly. It’ll only be a problem if that ‘good film’ doesn’t come soon.

Top Actors in Bollywood: April 2016

Now that Sidharth Malhotra’s Kapoor & Sons, Arjun Kapoor’s Ki & Ka and Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN are nearing the end of their runs, we are updating the list of Top Actors in Bollywood. We also highlight how the domestic box office is quickly becoming a two-man industry, because they (Aamir and Salman) are the ones who are holding the big festive dates. Since there are no major releases in May, the next update will be after the release of Housefull 3. Tiger Shroff won’t be included because the minimum number of films to qualify is 3.

Ki and Ka Total Collections and Verdict

Update: Ki and Ka has collected Rs 1.5 crore in its third week. The film was affected by the release of FAN, but continues to perform well at cities on the limited number of shows that it has at multiplexes. It’ll cross the 100 crore worldwide grosser in its 4th week – 6th film to do so after Airlift, Neerja, Kapoor & Sons, The Jungle Book and FAN. Ki and Ka has done very well in its second week at the box office, inspite of ‘The Jungle Book’ posting ridiculously huge numbers for a Hollywood film. The Arjun Kapoor starrer has collected Rs 12.54 crore in Week 2, which is a drop of 66% from Week 1.

FAN First Week Box Office Collections

Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN has just completed a poor first week at the box office. The film, which was expected to collect upwards of 90 crore in its first week, has collected Rs 71.5 crore in 7 days. It’s a case of the film letting the star down, as FAN opened very well on its opening day and sustained to reasonably good numbers during the weekend. But on the day of the test (Monday), the audience verdict was loud and clear. FAN was rejected by the paying public and the film crashed on each day of the weekend – Monday drop was huge, Tuesday was shocking as it was a partial holiday and the downward trend continued on Wednesday and Thursday (both days witnessing drops of 25% or more).

The Jungle Book India Collections: Dominates the box office

The Jungle Book has dominated the box office in its second week in India. The film is on course to become the highest grosser of 2016 this weekend. The second weekend business was affected by the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN, but the Hollywood film took over Monday onwards and became the first choice for moviegoers  during the weekdays.

FAN Official Box Office Collections

FAN has once again shown a big drop in business, as the film has fallen by 27% on Wednesday. Tuesday was a holiday for Mahavir Jayanti, so business was expected to come down, but the drop is still about 10% higher than where it should have been.
