Imtiaz Ali started his directorial career with arguably his best film – 2005’s Socha Na Tha starring Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia. The film got delayed, was promoted poorly by its producers (Deols) and eventually sank without a trace at the box office. A few months later, the film garnered cult status when it was released on home video. Socha Na Tha went on to be one of the most rented movies of its time.

A couple of years later, Ali released his second film Jab We Met. The film opened poorly at the box office, but with positive reviews and incredibly good mouth-publicity, Shahid and Kareena Kapoor epic on-screen love story went on to be one of the most successful films of 2007. Songs like Tum Se Hi, Aaoge Jab Tum and several others continue to be popular on Radio. Kareena as Geet delivered the best performance of her career and swept all awards that year.
In 2009, Love Aaj Kal hit screens to rave reviews. The Saif Ali Khan – Deepika Padukone starrer opened well, but couldn’t really recreate the magic of Jab We Met.
Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor was making waves in the industry and Ali signed him to play a difficult character of Janardhan “Jordan” Jakhar. While Ranbir’s performance was hailed as one of the best ever, the film didn’t work for many.
His latest release Highway has opened to a decent response at the box office, but critical acclaim was missing this time around.

Except Socha Na Tha & Highway I have watched all of them. For me Jab We met is the best. I’ve never heard that Socha Na Tha was a good movie, until I read this article. Would love to watch it too.

Jab we met was a very good movie no doubt.. but I couldnt connect much wid shahid’s character in the movie ..on the other hand watching lak n rockstar I thought saif n ranbir arent playing themselves but ‘me… ‘

For me, Jab We Met is the best film of Imtiaz Ali till date. I still remember the songs of the film which were one of the most played on radio. Mauja hi Mauja, Nagada and tumse hi were chartbusters in Mauritius. And of course Kareena Kapoor did a fantastic job in the movie. She was excellent. Her career best performance is in Jab We Met. Had it released on a greater number of screens, the movie could have crossed the 100 crore mark with the outstanding word of mouth publicity that it enjoyed. From a Bollywood fan from Mauritius!
