From a commoner in Delhi to one of the biggest superstars in the country, Shahrukh Khan is one of the biggest success stories in the industry today. Born in New Delhi on 2nd November 1965 and brought up in the coastal city of Mangalore for the first five years of his life, Shahrukh made his debut in the Hindi Film Industry about 2 decade ago with Deewana (1992), a film that won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Debut Male.
Later in the same year, Shahrukh featured in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, a film that remains close to his heart even today. The turning point in his career, however, came with two films in 1993 where he played characters with grey shades – Yash Chopra’s Darr and Abbas-Mustan’s Baazigar.
1995 though was a landmark year in his career. Two of the year’s biggest blockbusters, Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun and Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge released and the latter went on to become one of the biggest blockbuster in the history of Indian cinema and firmly established Shahrukh as the biggest superstar in the country. DDLJ is still running at Maratha Mandir in Mumbai!
In the following few years, SRK gained iconic status with romantic films like Yash Chopra’s Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Subhash Ghai’s Pardes and Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which remains one of the biggest hits of his career.

The beginning of the current century was probably the toughest of Shahrukh’s career with the media pitting him against Hrithik Roshan who made a spectacular debut in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. The two had a epic clash at the box office during Diwali in 2010 when Hrithik’s Mission Kashmir released on the same day as SRK’s Mohabbatein. While Mission Kashmir opened to a better response initially, it was Mohabbatein that eventually won the Diwali clash.

In the last decade or so, Shahrukh consolidated his status as one of the most bankable stars in the country with successful films like Devdas, Chalte Chalte, Kal Ho Na Ho, Main Hoon Na and Veer Zaara. The actor was unable to maintain his success streak when Swades and Paheli failed at the box office. Two rare failures were followed by 10 back-to-back successful films that started with Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and continues with his latest blockbusters Chennai Express and Happy New Year.

A few interesting points
- Shahrukh is second only to Rajesh Khanna when it comes to back-to-back hits. He currently has 10 and could eventually beat Khanna’s 15 consecutive hits record.
- At the time of this writing, SRK also has almost all the box office records under his name – Highest grosser in India, Highest worldwide grosser, Highest Opening Day / Weekend / Week – just to name a few.
- In every overseas market, Shahrukh is by far the biggest superstar. Some of his older films like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna are still in the Top 10.
- Not a single Shahrukh Khan film has ever been declared as a box office disaster!
- The total business generated by his films in India is Rs 1642.52 crore, only behind Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Yeh Lamhe Judaai ke film is a delayed release film in 2004 which was supposed to release in 10 years before…even some other person dubbed for SRK in that film
‘King of Hearts’ is also the ‘BOX OFFICE KING’!!!
SRK is undisputed King at the Box Office!!!
All the Best for ur upcoming Projects… Hope all of them will be ATBB!!!
SRK u will always stay at the No.1 Position..!!

JUST SEE FOURTH MOVIE IN THIS LIST IT’S….
Dulha Mil Gaya —> Disaster
wtf.. dulha mil gaya isn’t an srk film .. he just doing a guest appearance .. get some life
Ekdum sehi bat hei usme king ka appearance thaa
Quality hits matter over Normal hits or Blockbusters ..apart from Swades , CDI & KHKN i dont see srk giving anything new to Hindi cinema..Aamir Khan rules in this department nobody after 100 yrs will remember raju ban gaya but Lagaan, TZP, 3idiots , Dil Chahta & RDB will always be cherished.. there have been many kings in the past but only few are remembered by the world like Ashoka, Akbar, Alexander so Quality always precedes Quantity!
U are so very right
Lol.. Only 3 idiots will be remembered from amir and from srk ddlj amd kuch kuch kuch hota hain and om santi will be remembered for ever
…And people will remember SRK as the “Badshah of Bollywood,” “King of Bollywood,” “The King of Romance” and “The Greatest of All Time.” If people remember kings like Ashoka, Akbar and Alexander it doesn’t mean that they’ll forget SRK.
People will remeber aamir for his thug life in movies like ghulam for his 14 flop movies in 90s and for irritating us
Thats why i love him. Selfmade superstar. And also akshay. Both selfmade stars. No family member in industry. Lived on footpaths. Both now highest taxpayers of india.
Swades is a flop movie? Go check @indicine.
” The beginning of the current century was probably the
toughest of Shahrukh’s career”
THIS IS POWER OF HRITHIK ROSHAN who very early in career dared to clash with an established actor…
Anyway srk is truly a superstar and inspirational person n brilliant actor…hrithik n srk both rocks
@Niks
mr. blind hater, seems u havnt watched darr, bazigar, devdas, mnik….if dil chahta hai was path breaking, then i can easily claim kal ho na ho was the same( it was never a typical indian love story). regarding raju ban gaya gentleman, it released 20 years ago & ppl still talk abt it. and 1st tell ur mr perfakenist to play a challenging role like srk did in mnik or hrithik in guzarish & kmg…
Anand starring Rajesh Khanna and Geetanjali a Telugu movie starring Naga Arjuna and Girija Shettar are better than kal ho na ho. Even kal ho na ho is also good but not better than these two movies. I’m talking about these 3 movies because the basic concept is same.
Live life to the fullest and make it large if not long. Dil chahta hai is a truly path breaking movie which is surprisingly an average grosser at the box office
even ra one is a flop. distributor never got their money.so ra one is flip.basically the writer of this article is a hardcore srk fan thats why he mentioned over rated comment where truth is hidden.srk has many disaster but indicine never write it.ur site ur opinion but its false.
its a shame that ce crosses 3i. ppl wl forget ce after 15 days but 3i wl remain as a legendary film. collection is not the last word for a film.thank u
@niks. There are some srk films which will be remembered for even 1000 years, do you know what they are & why? Movies like maya memsaab, ra.1, kank, devdas (classic case of an all time classic remade worstly with the worst performances imaginable), mhn, oso, don 2, jthj etc (many of srk’s old movies) & now ce to name a few are the worst movies ever made in the bollywood history and they are so worse that even in next 1000 years they will be remembered for being so worse. As you already pointed out, he has what 2 or 3 movies which are of the highest quality and rest all are ‘cheap craps-which-are-epic cult classics-for-srk fans’ type movies.
really SRK is by far the biggest mega super star today.
@ready. if u don’t agree with Indicine WY do u visit this site. its as simple as that.
and just remember no one ll forget Chennai express ever. it was lot better than over the moon 3 idiots where vulgarity took the front seat. to name a few
1) elderly people removing their pants to show something great
2) some vulgar cheap speech
3) ill defined medical education
4) and to top it conduct a delivery through a vacuum
5) and even to copy it from chetan bhagats novel and to not give credit to him.
6) that smooch scene between actors. wow
man and u call it pathbreaking movie. shame on u
real path breaking movies are Chakde like movies
And more then 150 local and internationaly

Read the last column “the total business generated by his films in India is Rs 1642.52 crore, only behind Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar”.
huh king????
Saal Mein 10 Filmein Karne Ka Time Nahin Hai Usske Paas.
akshay doing 4 films in year .
His 85% movies flop in 90’s.
the only thing that hurts me
“Swades December 17 2004 15.25 Flop”
Exactly. Excellent story with a great concept but unfortunately a flop which is disappointing
You have included many movies in which SRK had a cameo…for instance….King Uncle and Billu……..please take care of it….
Yeh Lamhe Judai ke was a very delayed film…..it wasnt even a proper release
@Aki see the total movies of Salman & Akshay then said HUH
@indicine Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke was not a SRK’s movie. SRK never dubb that movie also that movie was incomplete but Director & Producer of the movie played a cheap game and released that half backed movies dubbed by some stupid voiceover. SRK never promoted it. How u can include Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke in SRK’s movie list?
Good Article by indicine. Though, I am Salman fan, but must admit SRK, along with Salman and Aamir ruled last 25 years in the industry, and entertained us thoroughly.
My favourite SRK films are Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, DDLJ, Swades, Asoka, etc.
My favourites are Still, Darr, MNK
@nvs. lol still sulking in . he he. can understand.
if that’s the case then none of salman movies would be remembered. or should I say remembered for 10000 years for the worst cheap crap performances ever done that too in every movie of his.poor u.
. lol.
as far as SRK goes DAR BAAZIGAR DEVDAS Kal ho na ho. VEER ZAARA. CHAK DE MNIK are far more better and memorable and commendable than some adult movie 3 idiots. he he
3 idiots is alot more realistic than SRK movies. Except for swades no movie of his has any sort of connection with ground reality. What do you have to say about Salman’s hum aapke hain kaun and the song o o jaane jaana in which his body looks great and guys became gym freaks. Amir Khan’s most memorable movie will be dangal for sure.
Not a single Shahrukh Khan film has ever been declared as a box office disaster!
What a mess ur report of box office anaylis of hit n flop r incorrect in itself here u r writing about
English Babu Desi Mem flop…………….. January 26 1996 4.25 Flop
And in previous post {Shahrukh Khan Career Analysis 1992 – 2001 (Part 1)} whose link is given in this post itself u can check about English Babu Desi Mem as a (Disaster)
1996 – The year turns out to be a nightmare for SRK with Chaahat (Flop) and English Babu Desi Mem (Disaster). Aamir Khan takes the top spot with Raja Hindustani (All Time Blockbuster) followed by Sunny Deol whose Jeet (Hit) and Ghatak (Hit) acquire 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. This year also marked the beginning of the Khan rivalry.
@Ajju, English Babu Desi Mem was made on a limited budget of around 5-6 crore. The film earned about the same as Chaahat. Definitely not a disaster.
aki foh ua kind info..
He is only behind salman and akshay…
Cus he has done alot less movies as comprd tu dem..
Akshay.. Above 120 movies=2000 crs.. Salman nearly 70 movies.=1723 or smethn..
Now let meh come to srk.. Only 52 movies…= 1685 crs….
Guess who is de conqeror of box offfice…
Look at his b.o run from 2015 apart from Chennai express, hny and Raees to some extent his b.o collections has been poor. 2/3 movies are overrated
please welcome the most stupid salman fan ever- NVS.
he was hiding himself as his predictions has gone wrong in a big way. we all r missing his navin & sachin11. they shld come together & raise the slogan- idiots reunite.
@NVS and niks
i think THAT U ARE STILL UNDER SHOCK
OF chennai express
tell what movies of salman will be remmemberd after only 25 yeas let alone 100
you guys are hypcrite u were crying over ready ceiling revenue
when the king gangraped ur movies u hidden behind amir 3 idiots
when this latter was also trolled you began this topic of quality
when were u when my name is khan was over the world well recieved ceitically and comercially shame on you hypocrites
@ indicine please correct that you have written that mission kashmir and mohabbtein clashed on diwali 2010 but both the movies clashed on diwali 2000 .
