If any film truly deserves a place in the coveted ‘100 crore club’, it’s Anurag Basu’s Barfi. The film has opened to a fantastic response, collecting Rs 41 crores in 4 days.
Now the big question – Can Barfi join the 100 crore club? Let’s analyse.
Factors in favour of Barfi crossing 100 crores
- The word-of-mouth is terrific, arguably the best for any film this year. The two other films to enjoy a similar response – Kahaani and Vicky Donor – went from strength-to-strength after the initial weekend.
- There is a holiday on Wednesday in several parts of the country for Ganesha Chaturthi and Barfi is likely to benefit. The film is likely to end it’s first week with 55-57 crores of business – which is on par with Raaz 3, even though Barfi had a smaller release and was a film pre-dominantly targeted at multiplex audiences.
- Barfi has tremendous repeat-value. We know a lot of people who have watched it more than twice in theatre.
Factors against Barfi
- The release of Heroine this weekend is likely to impact Barfi. But since both films are UTV productions, they are likely to ensure both have enough shows at multiplexes.
- The first four day figures of Barfi is slightly lower than Bol Bachchan, which just about managed to cross 100 crores. Again, since Barfi is mainly targeted at multiplex audience, it might find it slightly difficult without any support from single-screens.
Either way, Barfi is likely to be Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest solo-hit and has a good chance of going past multiplex-hits like Cocktail and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. 100 crores would be icing on the cake.

Barfii will shut down on 89crore, blockbuster hai, or kya…
realy barfi deservs 100 cr club.
So amazing movie. I saw on sunday it was housefull thanks i had booked earlier otherwise it was unable to get a ticket on the spot
If all critical movie make 100 cr than what mean by stardom.ranbir haven’t any stardom.
i dont want Barfi to cross 100 crore
reason?
dont wanna see ranbir’s fans behaving like sallu’s ans and chanting their actors name and collection on every page….
@kamran dude u r so jealus oF salman……tlkin abt salman fans….u only started chanting salman nme…….lolzzzzzz
100 Crores is not possible..for that u have to be Like Salman khan who has a tremenous fan following…..Ranbir is appreciating Salman khan these days..so I Think it would help Ranbir get a smart postion in the industry..If ranbir talks rude about salman,I swear, I would stop watching Ranbir’s movies,Even Srk’s movies are not Getting a proper benefit since he took panga with Salman,I don’t kNOw when was the last time, i DId watch srk’s movie,Those who have talked nonsense about salman, remained unnoticed and useless for many years…………So I appreciate Ranbir,BT those who take pangas with salman,I will stop watching their film,No matter how good their movies are……..Salman khan is the best,Yet I pray for Ranbir’s success,,,,,Barfi is a good movie, still i go with ek tha tiger…………Salman khan rocks…………Die hard fan of salman khan rite here…………Mr Sunil………Thank u
@indicine.
If heroine was’nt their then SURE SHOT..Even I want to see it second time..but no time..anyways
I think..films like Barfi are beyond 100cr club and shouldnt be be compared to big grossers..
This is a gem..that we will remember for years to come..
Even on imdb its 9.0 rated..highest ..beating GOW.
I think 80-90 seems legit..but u never know..Barfi might weave magic..
@kamran: unfortunately barfi has lot of problems to cross 100 cr. like its excellent only in the multiplex and no wide release like other movies released and earned 100 cr. inspite of limited relese barfi is doing excellent think what happens if barfi releases widely like ETT and had accepted by all audience
Also this week releasing geroine which is much awaited movie of the year and will hit the business of barfi that is very unfortunate b’cause people like massala movies and heroine is a masala movie
possible..i dont find interestin thin heroine…but never now…
Heroine will never effect Burfi.
Infact Heroine may be flop.
So there are changes for Barfi to join 100 crs.
@nagesh let herione to suceed gud for bollywood lot effort is made in film makin..but hope barfi score big..
it is a bit asking to much. definitly its not possible. i still havnt watched the movie but know one thing that ranbir’s acting is the main part of this movie. imagine if ranbir win an award again next year but to be honest he not a star. he does movies for awards only.
barfi truly deserves to be in the coveted 100 crore club…but yes chances are not that strong because there are releases each and every week..heroine,oh my god, etc. to name a few…it all depends on 2nd weekend..how much screen space will it get from multiplexes and how big it can collect in its 2nd weekend..by that time we will get to know the real picture of where is it heading in its lifetime run
@ahmed ranbir is big star in younger generation and he is promoted like tht thanks to media also…barfi may not typical commercial movie, its belon romantic genre ryt? just imagine if sherays talpade or newcomer don tht.. weekend collection wil be 15 crore only..ranbir is star kid we hav expect fact..he is not ayushman khurrana…i still feel movies lik Iqbal shd be promoted more

i repeatingly say….please avoid pushing ranbir to top……….its getting disgusting having barfi for 100 crore or not????certainly not…the audience now slowly realise that movie is only good in first half..second half BAKWAAS…everybody can predict the climax…please stop this argument of ranbir…he’s just a kid..let him grow. more to add ..please you useless critics atleast tell ranbir to look after his diet…otherwise in the next movie i’m producing..i’ll have to cast some underweight beggar!!!please.
its impossible to cross 100 crores for barfi ranbir only do movies for awards and not for audiences.media and critics are favourites of ranbir, srk, hrithik, kjo and yashraj they are against salman khan if salman does acting jury says it must be blockbuster and if salman delivers all time blockbuster they say there is no acting bull sheet and now a days salman movies have both power acting as well as aa time blockbuster
its a total bakwaas. acting! acting! acting!. there has been remarkable performances before this movie. it had zero content and story. just alittle bit comedy with good acting so how on earth is a good movie
100 crore not possible. movie is not that good
Barfi is a big flop it will not cross 100cr mark
ranbir is already superstar
@tiger
Your name suggests what standards u have…..
typical sallu fan….
all the best for kick and sherkhan…
If Barfi has to gross 100 crore, it have to get open week, otherwise Heroine & OMG have to flop badly ,or it have to run like Vicky Donor for 6 weeks, but Diwali releases will come.In short Barfi will fall short of 100 crores like ETT fell short of 3 Idiots. In short SO NEAR, YET SO FAR
Ask the audience what makes them watch a film in a theatre and the most common answer you get is “Star cast”. Yes, superstars ensure a good opening at the box office. But every few years, some existing superstars fade and a fresh set replaces them. Every superstar has his share of time on the silver screen, when his superstardom is at its peak. Dilip Kumar. Rajesh Khanna. Amitabh Bachchan. There is a definite, finite period for which they rule the marquee. Of course, their talent does not fade away, but the size of the audience that adores them dwindles over time.
While there could be multiple theories behind this transition, a key reason is that the movie going audience shows a churn every decade. So audiences who used to make a beeline in front of the theatres every Friday in the late 90s no longer visit them with the same frequency or passion. But their kids, nephews or nieces do.
Every time the film-going audience changes, their expectations from content change. So, the romance that worked in the 70s won’t work in the 80s and so on. By implication, a romantic star of a decade may not be able to deliver to the expectations of romance one or two decades later. Same for comedy or action.
Let’s look at our current superstars. The table below list the top 10 male stars in India based on their average popularity share from November 2010 to July 2012. (This data is collected through Stars India Loves, our star popularity ranking study conducted amongst 3,250 film viewers every month across 16 key theatrical markets).
Rank Hero Avg. Popularity Share Age
1 Salman Khan 44 46
2 Shahrukh Khan 28 46
3 Hrithik Roshan 23 38
4 Aamir Khan 21 47
5 Akshay Kumar 19 44
6 Ranbir Kapoor 12 29
7 Ajay Devgn 12 43
8 Shahid Kapoor 11 31
9 Amitabh Bachchan 8 69
10 John Abraham 5 39
The average age of our top 10 stars is 43 years. Even if we remove Amitabh Bachchan from this list, the average still remains 40 years. Only one star in the list is below 30 years in age (Ranbir Kapoor at 29 years).
In the next five years, the industry will face a problem as the top stars begin to fastart to fade away in the next five years. The Khans would be in their 50s, while Akshay Kumar & Ajay Devgn will be nearing 50. Hrithik Roshan and John Abraham will be in their mid-40s. Ranbir would lead the young pack, at a not-so-young age of 34 years.
We don’t see too many young faces coming up fast enough to secure their positions in the top 10, even top 20. Ranbir has a maximum of two releases every year.Even newcomers like Ranveer Singh or Ayushmann Khuranna are being selective in their film choices. While this may allow them to deliver better quality, it doesn’t exactly help in creating and strengthening their fanbase.
In sharp contrast, superstars had upto 4-5 releases in the 90s. They were constantly feedling their fanbase with a release every 3-4 months, in turn consolidating the fanbase and growing it all the time.
If superstars indeed fade away and equally strong replacements don’t arrive in time, it can affect the box office directly. Out of the 52 weeks in a year, about 15 weeks have special holidays and festivals, turning them into big weekend opportunities at the box office, of the tune of Rs. 50cr or more for the first three days currently. But this will be possible only with superstar-led films. If the industry has to maintain the current momentum of 25% plus growth in business year-on-year, it needs a new breed of superstars to take over soon.
Of course, like every Hindi film climax, while the situation may look grim, I hope that the ending will be a happy one. Just the way Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan came out of nowhere and catapulted their way to superstardom, there will be new ones who will emerge soon. Hopefully, Mere Superstars Aayenge.
dont compare barfi with 100 crore grosser.. barfi is a pure cinematic joy… its way beyond 100 crore club…
